Every town needs a hero, and Detective Cal Farrell fits the bill. He stopped an active shooter six months earlier, and now he's become the darling of the Alexandria press. The problem is that Cal remembers nothing from that day. He's working with a psychiatrist to recover his memories, but hasn't had much luck. Then, on one of his morning runs, he is once again the first on scene for a grisly discovery—a body hanging impossibly high on a tree. Soon there's another victim, killed by a blade and dumped in a ravine. As the bodies begin to stack up, each staged more gruesomely than the last, Cal sees a baroque pattern to the crimes that no one else seems to understand—something out of legend. As Alexandria dubs the serial killer "Old Town Jack," Cal learns that the only thing a city loves more than creating a hero is tearing one down. And if he can't get to the truth, this hometown hero might just be next in line for destruction.

Right after Patrol Officer Cal Farrell, the protagonist of this suspenseful thriller from Schweigart (The Devil’s Colony), successfully deals with a mentally ill vagrant who’s making a nuisance of himself in the Old Town section of Alexandria, Va., he’s dispatched to the scene of an active shooter in a nearby office building. Cal is later credited with killing the shooter, but he has no memory of doing so. Immediately promoted to detective and praised as a hero by the press, Cal is shunned by fellow detectives who believe he didn’t deserve his promotion. Wracked with imposter syndrome, he receives mandatory treatment from the department’s psychologist. Six months after the deadly incident, Cal spots a body dangling from a tree while on his morning run. More murder victims follow, all of whom turn out to be tied to Cal, making him a suspect. Feeling himself an outsider in his department, Cal strives to prove himself as an investigator. The brisk, action-packed plot is matched by a deep dive into Cal’s psyche. Readers will hope they haven’t seen the last of this well-developed lead.

Detective Cal Farrell has had a rough year. His quick action during a mass shooting earns him the title of hero, but also ignites distrust and hostility among his colleagues and leaves him with deep psychological scars. Cal reintroduces running to his daily routine in an effort to keep the demons at bay, but then he discovers the site of a gruesome murder on a morning run. While murder is not Cal's department, he can't shake the case and begins to follow hunches as a twist-filled serial pattern emerges. Schweigart (The Devil's Colony) keeps listeners on the edge of their seat, second-guessing Cal's every interaction with colleagues and suspects as he follows the clues to the chilling conclusion. Narrator Matt Godfrey brings Schweigart's wry humor to life through Cal's narrative. He matches each character's voice perfectly, making it easy for listeners to discern who is speaking by inflection alone. Godfrey's voice for the serial killer is especially well done--contempt and disgust drip from each word. VERDICT Schweigart's first foray into mystery and suspense is recommended for readers of Michael Connelly, David Baldacci's "Memory Man" series, and T. Jefferson Parker.--Katy Duperry
