She is the most popular novelist in history, yet the drama and torment of Agatha Christie's private life remains a mystery even to her most ardent fans. She made no secret of her disdain for the press and for those who wished to intrude on her private life. Nonetheless, in this immensely readable and intimate biography, best-selling author Richard Hack reveals the romance, scandal, and betrayal that drove one of the 20th century's most celebrated literary figures. Drawing from over 5,000 unpublished documents, Duchess of Death provides the most complete and knowing portrait of Christie to date.

Agatha Christie, author of 80 novels and stories, maintained a secretive personal life. Using Christie's autobiography, previously unpublished letters and notes, plus interviews with those who knew her, author Richard Hack draws an indelible portrait of the real woman. From his first words, narrator Nicolas Coster's voice commands attention. Coster's star-quality performance captures every intriguing nuance in Hack's novel-like retelling of Christie's life, complete with its mystery, romance, and scandal. As her troubled first marriage was ending, Christie disappeared for 11 days, but her disappearance was only one of many episodes that colored the normally publicity-shy Christie's life. Hack's fascinating recounting, enhanced by Coster's superb narration, guarantees that listeners will enjoy this unauthorized biography almost as much as they do Christie's mysteries. S.J.H. Best known for biographies of Howard Hughes, Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner and J. Edgar Hoover, Hack this time investigates the grand dame of the mystery novel, Agatha Christie. Hack smartly opens with the prolific U.K. author's biggest mystery: an eleven-day disappearing act she pulled in 1926, following the final breakdown of her marriage. From there, Hack meticulously recounts her personal and professional life, exploring Christie's youth in seaside Devon, her beginnings as a writer, and her global escapades with second husband Max Mallowan. Hack is thorough with the facts, but also humanizes his subject with personal details like Christie's strained relationship with her daughter, well-rooted in letters and other primary sources (including Christie's autobiography). Though occasionally overwritten, Hack's work should entrance Christie fans, as well as anyone who enjoys lively literary biography. Color photos.
