Set in Virginia during the Civil War, Candle in the Darkness is a story of faith and love. Caroline Fletcher grew up wealthy and pampered on a Southern plantation home with many slaves. Owing to her father's busy schedule and her mother's depression, which eventually led to her suicide, Caroline is reared by the family slaves, yet she is sickened by slavery and torn between supporting abolitionism and remaining loyal to her family and the South. Through the years, Caroline embarks on a dangerous journey of spying and conspiracy that examine her faith. Austin's historical novel, which is read by Christina Moore, is laced with love and romance; its heroine is a woman who learns to follow her conscience rather than social norms. Unfortunately, the characters could be better developed, and the plot is tedious; purchase for fans of the author.-Carol Stern, Glen Cove P.L., NY
